Lignite Development Zone

The LDZ is a vision of Australia’s brown coal future realised through an election year marketing campaign. Showcasing Victoria’s lignite reserves – 20% of the global supply of brown coal in the Latrobe Valley alone -the Lignite Development Zone exists, as do all major infrastructure projects, at the intersection between propaganda and planning.

The project is informed by the Earth Resource Development Council’s white paper Possible Futures for Victorian Brown Coal, a government initiative aiming to create a brown coal manufacturing hub in the Latrobe Valley. The government’s proposal, at odds with the public’s perception of a reduction in coal use, depends entirely on speculative technologies with uncertain environmental costs.
